Minister-President Sven Schulze of the CDU has cast his vote in the state election, following the AFD’s top candidate, Ulrich Siegmund. He marked his ballot on Sunday morning at a polling station run by the AWO State Association of Saxony-Anhalt.
Before casting his vote, Schulze stated that a high voter turnout was anticipated, citing the results of the postal voting as evidence. He noted that “Saxony-Anhalt has many tasks to solve in the coming weeks.” Schulze added that while everyone is focused on Saxony-Anhalt today, “tomorrow not everyone will be waiting for Saxony-Anhalt.” Therefore, he emphasized that today is a crucial day not only for the entire state but also for Germany and Europe.
Polls currently show the AFD leading the CDU by approximately 20 percentage points. Consequently, Schulze must hope that the AFD does not achieve an absolute majority, which would be necessary for them to remain in office. However, if they do, he would likely have to consult with the Linke party, something many members of the CDU have previously ruled out.
Polling stations will close at 6 PM, after which results from post-election surveys and projections are expected.
