Wadephul Welcomes US-Iran Deal as Regional Opportunity, Calls for Concrete Steps

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) welcomed the peace agreement between the United States and Iran. Speaking on Monday during a meeting with his EU counterparts in Luxembourg, Wadephul stated his belief that both sides show a genuine willingness to make the current ceasefire effective. He added that they must now take advantage of this opportunity to turn deepening negotiations over the next 60 days into reality, urging all parties not to let this chance slip away.

The minister also addressed the situation in Lebanon. He emphasized that Iran must influence Hezbollah to ensure there are no further attacks on Israel. Correspondingly, Israel, he noted, must ensure that it has no reason to launch or conduct attacks in Lebanon. Wadephul called this a “chance for the entire region” that everyone must seize collaboratively.

While he could not provide details about the agreement itself, Wadephul said they were “very interested in following what the substance of this accord consists of” in the coming days. He estimated that certainty regarding the details would only be available by Friday. For Europe, it is crucial that the key objectives previously articulated are met. Wadephul stressed that it must be clear that the Strait of Hormuz is once again freely navigable for shipping without any restrictions. Furthermore, the agreement must guarantee that Iran poses no further threat, particularly regarding the possibility of future nuclear armaments, according to the CDU politician.
