Munich Attack: Afghan Man Charged with Deadly Verdi Event Assault

Federal prosecutors have filed charges against an Afghan national allegedly responsible for a fatal attack at a Verdi union event in Munich. The Federal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice stated they believe the suspect acted based on religious motivations. The accused faces charges of murder in two cases, attempted murder in 44 cases, as well as charges of bodily harm, aggravated bodily harm and dangerous interference with road traffic.

On February 13, 2025, the suspect is alleged to have deliberately driven his vehicle into a crowd attending a union event in downtown Munich. The incident resulted in two fatalities and left 44 others injured, some with life-threatening conditions.

The suspect has been in pre-trial detention since the incident. The Federal Public Prosecutor General’s office took over the investigation from the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office in February.
