Wadephul: Signs of Progress Emerge in Gaza Conflict

German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul has expressed cautious optimism regarding the trajectory of the conflict in Gaza, citing what he describes as “genuine movement” in diplomatic efforts. Speaking to German broadcaster ARD, Wadephul indicated a shift in focus beyond ceasefires, with discussions now centering on a sustainable political solution for the region.

He stated that for the first time in two years, Israeli, Arab and Palestinian actors appear to be converging on visions for the future governance of the Gaza Strip.

Minister Wadephul is expected to extend his ongoing tour of the Middle East to further support the ongoing peace negotiations. Following talks in Qatar and Kuwait, he will travel to Israel on Monday and subsequently to Egypt, where key negotiations are taking place. He affirmed that Germany remains closely engaged with mediators in Cairo and Doha and will continue to offer support if deemed beneficial.

The discussions involve considerations of the peace plan proposed by former US President Donald Trump, which Wadephul credited with having a “decisive impact”. He acknowledged the involvement of the United States and suggested the world should recognize and appreciate their engagement. The question of whether Trump deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, Wadephul added, is a matter for the Nobel Committee to determine.
