The federal government has proposed appointing Gabriel Felbermayr to the Federal Advisory Council for the assessment of the macro‑economic development. On Wednesday the cabinet adopted a resolution at the suggestion of Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU). Felbermayr is to serve in the role until 28 February 2031.
Felbermayr has been director of the Austrian Institute of Economic Research in Vienna and a professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business since 2021. He previously chaired the Kiel Institute for World Economics. His research focuses on international trade theory and policy, labour‑market studies and European economic integration.
Reiche said that with Felbermayr the council gains a “recognised expert in trade policy, geo‑economics and European integration”. She added that his analytical depth and international experience are particularly important in the current geopolitical climate. Felbermayr succeeds Ulrike Malmendier on the council, whose mandate was not renewed.
