Former Ukrainian Ambassador Melnyk Seeks Return to Berlin Post (Alternative focusing on political ambition: Melnyk Eyes Second Term as Ukraine’s Diplomat in Berlin)

Andriy Melnyk, the former Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, has publicly expressed his interest in a potential second term in Berlin. Speaking to “Der Spiegel”‘s video format, “Spitzengespräch,” Melnyk stated that if the opportunity arose, he would gladly serve as Ambassador again.

He explained that success in such a role depends heavily on deep affection and understanding of the host country. Melnyk added that he likes Germany and hopes he can grasp it better than his colleagues. He believes this deep familiarity could allow him to be highly effective and thus makes a return to the German capital something he can envision.

While he feels confident he could gain approval from the German federal government for such a position, he also admitted that a second term would be “somewhat unrealistic.” Furthermore, the diplomat recalled his time as Ukraine’s representative from 2015 to 2022, during which he sharply criticized the then-coalition government for its hesitancy in providing adequate support for Ukraine.
