Trump Proposes Maritime Toll in Strait of Hormuz to Assert US Security Control

The United States intends to take control of shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz and will impose a fee for accessing the waterway. Speaking on Monday, President Donald Trump announced the reintroduction of what he called the “Iranian blockade.” He clarified that this blockade specifically targets only Iranian ships or customers, preventing them from sailing or leaving the strait, while confirming that all other nations could continue to use the strait “fairly and unimpeded.”

Trump further explained that the U.S. would henceforth operate as the “guardian of the Strait of Hormuz.” In exchange for these security measures, a 20 percent tax would be levied on all transported goods. This initiative is slated for immediate implementation. According to the President, the blockade is necessary to “ensure security in this volatile region.”
