Two firefighting helicopters collided on Sunday during operations combating massive forest fires in Greece. The fire department reported that the helicopters, each carrying two crew members, crashed in the Attica region west of Athens. They had launched from the Elefsina military airfield, and search and rescue operations have been initiated. The forest fires have recently spread significantly across Greece. According to authorities, around 500 firefighters and volunteer helpers are currently engaged in the effort. The flames extended rapidly over the weekend due to strong winds, and more than 12,000 hectares of land across Greece are estimated to have been destroyed already.
