Following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the state election authority published the preliminary official final results overnight. According to these results, the AfD emerges as the clear strongest force in the new state parliament with 43.8 percent of the vote-a significant gain of 23 percentage points.
The CDU suffered a major setback, losing more than half of its votes and settling at 17.2 percent. Behind them, the SPD slightly improved its showing to 9.3 percent. The Greens also saw an improvement, securing 8.9 percent, while the Left Party slightly declined to 8.6 percent. Meanwhile, the FDP fell significantly to 2.6 percent and will therefore not gain a seat in the state parliament. However, a new entry is possible for the BSW, which achieved 5.3 percent.
In terms of parliamentary mandates, the AfD secures 39 seats in the state legislature, placing it equal in number to the CDU (15 seats), the SPD (8 seats), the Greens (8 seats), and the Left Party (8 seats). With 5 mandates, the BSW could potentially play the role of “kingmaker” among the parties.
Smaller parties achieved the following results: the Free Voters received 1.2 percent, the Animal Protection Party received 1.1 percent, the Garden Party and the Animal Welfare Alliance each garnered 0.6 percent, Volt and the satirical party “Die Partei” each received 0.3 percent, the PdF 0.2 percent, and “dieBasis” 0.1 percent.
The voter turnout was 77.7 percent, marking the highest participation rate ever recorded in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt since the post-reunification era.
