Alice Weidel, the Chairwoman of the AfD party, sharply criticized North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst (CDU) regarding his proposal to establish a federal-state working group to examine a ban on the AfD. Speaking to the television channel “Welt,” Weidel suggested that his proposal reveals more about Wüst’s understanding of democracy than it does about the AfD itself.
“I had to laugh when I read that Mr. Wüst was actually striving for this working group regarding the ban procedure for the Alternative for Germany,” Weidel said. “It seems to say more about Wüst and his democratic understanding than about the AfD. This appears to go hand-in-hand with the disastrous election results.”
The AfD chief further commented that it seemed as if the strongest force wanted to be banned. “In that case, I wish you a lot of pleasure doing so,” said the AfD leader. She concluded by suggesting that the focus should actually be on solving the problems faced by the people in the country.
