In a joint statement, survivors and relatives of victims from the NSU, as well as those involved in the right-wing and antisemitic terror attacks in Munich, Halle, and Hanau, are urging people to vote for Elif Eralp as the Governing Mayor of Berlin.
The letter, titled “For Elif Eralp” and reported by the “taz”, declares that the signatories want “a different country and a different Berlin-one where we can live without fear, raise our voices, and defend our rights.” They further state that voting for Eralp is a vote “against any form of racism and against antisemitism.” Eralp, described as a politician and jurist, stands up for those who are threatened and advocates for all who are marginalized or disrespected.
The initiative began with Seda Basay-Yildiz, an attorney for the NSU secondary prosecution. According to the “taz”, the group includes ten signatories. Among them are the Simsek siblings, whose father was murdered by the NSU; Sibel and Hasan Leyla, whose son was killed in the attack on the OEZ in Munich; Çetin Gültekin, who lost his brother in Hanau; and Ismet Tekin, a survivor of the antisemitic incident in Halle.
Basay-Yildiz noted to the “taz” that Electing Elif Eralp in Berlin would send an important signal-one with nationwide political relevance-that “not everything is too late, and not everything is lost.”
