The United States has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, which is scheduled to take place in Miami this December. This announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, at the periphery of the UN General Assembly in New York, shortly after he met with his Russian counterpart, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The American government is hopeful that Putin will accept the invitation, viewing it as a potential opportunity for a direct discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump. Putin has not attended a G20 meeting in person since Osaka in 2019; while he was invited to the 2021 summit in Rome, he only participated via video link rather than attending in person.
