Fed Holds Interest Rates Steady Amid Robust US Economy and Persisting Inflation Concerns

The US central bank, the Federal Reserve (Fed), has decided not to immediately raise its interest rates. According to a statement released following a committee meeting on Wednesday, the benchmark interest rate will remain within a range of 3.75 to 4.00 percent. This decision came via a majority vote of ten to two within the Fed committee.

The rationale provided by the Fed cited the strong expansion of economic activity within the United States. Despite increased uncertainty, partly attributed to “geopolitical developments,” domestic consumption remains “robust.” Furthermore, productive growth is strong, and investments in capital goods have been solid. Job gains are keeping pace with the supply of labor, leading to minimal changes in the unemployment rate.

The central bank did acknowledge that inflation continues to be high. However, the Fed stated that it is awaiting further data to determine the “appropriate monetary policy course” necessary to ensure inflation returns to its target of two percent. The Fed affirmed its commitment to maintaining “price stability.”

In September, the Fed had hiked the benchmark interest rate for the first time in nearly three years, primarily in response to significantly rising inflation, which is also a major factor in the upcoming Congressional elections. Given this context, the decision to implement a rate pause this time was largely anticipated by financial experts.
