Concerns are emerging within the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) regarding the approach taken by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States. A group within the SPD, known as the Seeheimer Kreis, has cautioned that the German and European economies must not be disadvantaged in the escalating dispute.
According to comments made to “Der Spiegel” by SPD parliamentarian Esra Limbacher, the group believes von der Leyen has been “too hesitant” in her dealings with the US. Limbacher emphasized the need for the European Union to either secure a “binding and fair agreement” with the United States or demonstrate a more assertive stance.
The situation arises from pressure exerted by US President Donald Trump, who is pushing for concessions aimed at reducing the US trade deficit with the European Union. Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on imports from the EU if a resolution is not reached. Commission President von der Leyen has previously tempered expectations for a detailed trade agreement, citing time constraints as a significant obstacle.
Limbacher insists on the necessity for “clear and credible reciprocal actions” from the United States before any concessions are considered. She added that if such actions are not forthcoming, Europe should be prepared to implement its own “confident trade policy countermeasures”. The priority, she stated, is to prevent repercussions for industries such as the German steel sector.
