AfD Keeps Coalition Door Open with BSW in the East Despite Campaign Focus on Majority Rule

The AfD leadership has indicated that the possibility of alliances with Sahra Wagenknecht’s Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) in Eastern Germany is not completely ruled out. A spokesman for AfD Chairperson Alice Weidel told the newspaper “Bild” that the party would not “completely rule out” any option that could lead to the formation of a “viable government”. However, the spokesman also stated that the discussion regarding alliances with the BSW currently plays a “secondary role” within the party, emphasizing that the “primary goal” of the election campaign is achieving an “absolute majority of mandates”.

This response comes after BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht told the newspaper that “a vote for the BSW would reject the firewall”. She advocated for a “non-party-affiliated prime minister who forms a competence cabinet and governs through changing majorities, without excluding any parties”.

Leif-Erik Holm, the AfD candidate for the regional election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, told “Bild” that their clear aim is “single-party rule in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern”. He cautioned that “a vote for the BSW would be wasted” adding, “I don’t think the group will enter the parliament”. Should the BSW still enter the parliament, Holm noted that the AfD is “naturally open to discussion” but stressed that the BSW must clarify its fundamental position regarding the AfD by then.
