The regional executive board of BSW unanimously decided on Wednesday evening to open talks with the AfD. According to a party spokesperson speaking to MDR, the objective of the meetings will be to discuss energy supply, education, and foreign policy. The BSW reportedly received an official invitation from the AfD to engage in dialogue as early as Tuesday.
It is noteworthy that this same invitation was sent to all other parties elected to the new state parliament. However, the CDU, SPD, Greens, and the Left Party declined the offer. BSW top candidate Thomas Schulze strongly criticized these rejections, calling the decision by other parties to outright reject “the conversation itself” a “poor political conduct” and a “bad sign for the democratic culture in our country.”
Despite winning the state election by a significant margin, the AfD does not hold an absolute majority in Saxony-Anhalt. To form a government, they would need either a coalition partner, individual representatives from other factions, or they would have to function in a minority government.
