Following the resignation of Jens Spahn (CDU) as the leader of the Union Parliamentary Group in the Bundestag, there is growing pressure to reinstate Ralph Brinkhaus into this high-profile position.
The Young Union group in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe district launched a coordinated call on Instagram over the weekend, arguing that “Ralph Brinkhaus is the right person for the chairmanship of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group.” They stressed that they require his competence and experience for “genuine state modernization.”
This personnel suggestion was echoed by Benedikt Groß, the Chairman of the Youth Organization of the Christian Democratic Workers’ Association, an official CDU affiliate. On Sunday, Groß stated on X/Twitter, simply, “Please do it.” Further support came from Andreas Püttmann, a writer and former member of a CDU “Future Commission” (2014-2015), who commented on Bluesky: “Fractions Chairman now Röttgen or Brinkhaus? You can still dream, I suppose.”
Brinkhaus previously held the position of Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group from September 2018 until February 2022, during which time he also served as the Leader of the Opposition from December 2021 to February 2022. He attained his role spectacularly, winning a battle vote against Volker Kauder, a close associate of Angela Merkel. Brinkhaus declined to comment on the matter when approached by the dts Nachrichtenagentur over the weekend.
