The Union party proposes introducing a “Deutschland cap” for wine bottles, modeled after the Austrian system, as a measure to combat the current crisis in German viticulture, according to the “Rheinische Post”. The aim of this initiative is to increase the consumption of domestically produced wine. Artur Auernhammer (CSU), the Union faction’s spokesperson for wine policy, told the newspaper, “With a German flag on the cap, German wine would be more visible. Right now, we are not visible.” He cited Austria as a model, noting that quality wines there typically feature a red-white-red band and a distinctive twist closure. Auernhammer also stressed that the German wine industry generally agrees that a specific seal must be developed to make the wine easier to identify at the bottle opening.
Josef Oster, a CDU member representing the Koblenz wine region and chairman of the Bundestag’s Interior Committee, deemed the Austrian model a “very interesting approach.” He stated that creating a recognizable hallmark for German wine is something he finds genuinely worth considering. Adding to the gravity of the situation, farming president Joachim Rukwied told the “Rheinische Post” that German viticulture is “facing the biggest crisis in decades.” Due to the poor market conditions, he predicted that “we will lose vineyard areas to a considerable extent.”
