Green Party leader Franziska Brantner is advocating for a European peace initiative regarding the conflict in Ukraine. According to statements provided to newspapers from the Funke media group, she argues that Germany must establish a reliable negotiation format in collaboration with France, the United Kingdom, Poland, and other European partners. This requires creating a European contact group responsible for keeping dialogues open, developing proposals, and operating in close consultation with the Ukrainian government.
Brantner stated that if the United States temporarily pulls back from a mediating role, Europe must step in to fill this diplomatic void. She insisted that this responsibility goes beyond a simple backup plan; it is a matter of historical duty. Therefore, she stressed that Europe cannot afford to be hesitant but must actively shape this role.
In parallel with this diplomatic push, Brantner called for increased pressure on Moscow. She demands the implementation of further sanctions, tougher measures targeting Russia’s so-called ‘shadow fleet,’ and the utilization of frozen Russian assets to provide support to Ukraine. Furthermore, she called for a decisive expansion of Ukraine’s political, economic, and military aid.
The Green party spokesperson cautioned that Europeans must not remain passive onlookers if Russia attempts to achieve its war objectives through terror directed at civilian populations.
