Greens Slam Government Plan to Slash Crucial Climate Transformation Fund

The Green Party members within the Bundestag are strongly criticizing the federal government’s plans to reallocate €2.7 billion from the Climate Transformation Fund (KTF) into the general budget next year. Lisa Badum, the faction’s climate policy spokesperson, told “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the fund is designed for the country’s secure, future-proof transformation, not as a resource bank for the Merz government. She stressed that climate protection must not be compromised.

Badum raised concerns regarding the 2027 budget draft, which was approved by the cabinet on Monday, warning that the long-term consequences of these cuts will ultimately cost vastly more than what is allegedly being saved now.

The KTF is largely financed by revenue from the European Emissions Trading System. However, according to the budget draft, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) intends to use approximately half of the anticipated 2027 revenues for purposes outside of the Climate Transformation Fund.
