Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader, is scheduled to conduct numerous bilateral discussions during the EU West Balkans Summit in Montenegro this Friday. Government sources confirmed on Thursday that meetings are planned with the Montenegrin President, the Prime Ministers of North Macedonia and Albania, and the President of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Additionally, Merz intends to hold a conversation with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic alongside EU Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Officials further indicated that Merz plans to place special emphasis during these talks on the EU accession prospects of the six countries in the Western Balkans. It is also expected that concrete initial proposals for faster integration into EU institutions and policies will be discussed even before full membership is achieved. The EU West Balkans Summit is taking place in Tivat on Friday, marking Montenegro’s first turn as host. In addition to the 27 EU member states and institutional representatives, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Kosovo have also been invited.
