Atalanta Bergamo won the return leg of the Champions League playoff 4‑1 against Borussia Dortmund, securing a spot in the round of 16 after losing 0‑2 at home.
In front of their home crowd, the Italians got the better start. Gianluca Scamacca opened the scoring in the 5th minute, and just before the break Davide Zappacosta added a second in the 45th minute. Mario Pasalic extended the lead to 3‑0 in the 57th minute, turning the aggregate score in favor of the hosts.
Dortmund pushed for a late draw. Karim Adeyemi cut the deficit to 3‑1 in the 75th minute, giving the visitors a glimmer of hope. Yet in a chaotic period of stoppage time a penalty decided the match. After video evidence, Ramy Bensebaini received a yellow‑red card in the 90+7 minute, and fellow defender Nico Schlotterbeck was sent off from the bench in the 90+8 minute. Lazar Samardzic then converted the penalty in the eighth minute of added time, sealing the final 4‑1 scoreline.
Throughout the game, Atalanta dominated possession, constantly threatening from the wings, while Dortmund struggled to find the back of the net. Several opportunities went untouched, and shots on target and saves from goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi prevented an early comeback. With the decisive home victory, Atalanta advances to the next round.
