Greens Criticize Warken’s Health Reform, Demanding Deeper Cost Controls

Felix Banaszak, leader of the Greens, asserted that the statutory health insurance system urgently requires reform, stating in interviews with the “Mediengruppe Bayern” newspapers that the funding mechanism is currently at a financial dead end. To fix this, he argued that it is crucial to address both the funding side and the expenditure side of the system.

However, he launched sharp criticism against the current proposals put forward by Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU). Banaszak warned that these suggestions risk disproportionately burdening both contributors and businesses. He argued this timing was particularly poor, given that many citizens are already struggling with rising living costs, and the broader economy remains under pressure.

Going further in his critique, Banaszak suggested that the minister lacks the political courage to confront powerful lobbying interests and tackle the system’s core cost drivers. He pointed to concrete measures that should be on the table, such as financing services that are not covered by insurance through tax revenue, or implementing a consistent cap on medicine costs. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of focusing on prevention to achieve long-term cost reductions, cautioning that any supposed savings in one area will ultimately cost twice as much in the long run.

Ultimately, Banaszak called on Warken to do more than just treat the existing symptoms; she must fairly distribute the burden and boldly confront the major sources of spending growth. Otherwise, he warned, the reform efforts risk eroding public trust and only worsening the existing imbalances within the system.
