CDU leader Friedrich Merz indicated that Germany might participate in a potential mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking in Berlin on Monday before traveling to the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, Merz stated, “We want to engage with our partners in ensuring free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.” He added that action would begin as soon as the necessary conditions are met. These prerequisites will be discussed in Évian with the United States, President Trump, European partners, and regional states, although Merz did not specify what those conditions would be or how a German participation might concretely look. Furthermore, discussions on the war in Ukraine with US President Donald Trump are scheduled for the G7 summit. Merz noted that the geopolitical situation remains “a stress test for the entire world economy.” Consequently, themes such as “reliable trade relations,” critical raw materials, and resilient supply chains will also be on the agenda in Évian-les-Bains.
