Coalition Door Ajar: Krach Keeps CDU Options Open After Wegner Exit, Criticizes Political Status Quo

Following the resignation of Berlin’s Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), SPD top candidate Steffen Krach stated that he still does not rule out potential cooperation with the CDU after the state election.

Speaking on the POLITICO Berlin Playbook Podcast, Krach clarified, “I did not explicitly say that cooperation with the CDU is off the table. Of course, this is a new situation, and we are currently working with Stefan Evers, and that naturally remains a possibility for the future.”

However, Krach maintained a highly critical stance regarding Wegner’s successor, stating emphatically, “Stefan Evers is not a new start.” He continued that Evers supported the “Wegner system” right up until the end, while also questioning the role the Finance Senator played in the ongoing subsidy funding affair.
