During the ongoing debate about antisemitism within the Berlin Left party, the federal government’s new anti-racism representative, Katharina von Schnurbein, considers the party leadership responsible. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she noted, “The fact that preliminary discussions had to take place on the topic of antisemitism speaks volumes.”
She stated that the outcome-specifically, the declaration recognizing Israel’s right to exist and the agreed-upon expert commission-would be “not bad at all, provided it is implemented.” However, she added that the disagreement among 120 Left Party politicians “is alarming.” Von Schnurbein stressed that the Left Party leadership must now act and make a decisive statement before potential new coalition negotiations.
According to Von Schnurbein, extreme fringes across the political spectrum-including Islamists, the Left, and the Right-have little in common, yet they can agree on the issues of anti-Zionism and antisemitism. She urged readers to recognize this point, emphasizing that the danger posed to democracy “cannot be overestimated.”
