Court Delivers Partial Compensation to Magdeburg Attack Victims Despite Millions in Claims

A year and a half after the attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market, a final financial assessment of the physical injuries sustained by the victims has been released. These figures come from R+V Insurance, which had covered the rental car used as a weapon by the perpetrator, Taleb A. According to the reported assessment, the company evaluated all personal claims from those affected and determined a total uninsured sum of approximately nine million euros.

However, the available funds are insufficient to cover all demands completely. In principle, the vehicle owner must bear responsibility when someone is killed or injured by a car-in the case of the Magdeburg fatality, this responsibility falls to the rental company or its insurer. Nevertheless, the road traffic laws impose a liability ceiling of five million euros. Additionally, an independent Voluntary Traffic Victim Aid organization provides another 2.5 million euros. This association is financed by all German motor liability insurers.

Consequently, the R+V representative stated that a total of 7.5 million euros is available for payment. Since the total claims amounted to nine million euros, a portion of the demand remains unpaid. Those affected ultimately received a payment equivalent to approximately 80 percent of their respective claims.
