Linke Launches Nationwide Social Protests Against Government Budget Cuts and Social Reforms

Ines Schwerdtner, the leader of The Left party, has called for people to join social protests, arguing that the country is failing to advance while simultaneous cuts are being imposed. Speaking to the broadcasters RTL and ntv, Schwerdtner stated that hardworking people across the nation are being insulted daily while being told to tighten their belts even further.

She expressed that the public frustration and anger are justified, prompting the party to mobilize for demonstrations. “We clearly have to put pressure on Merz because this federal government believes it can just continue like this” Schwerdtner remarked. She pointed to impending reforms, such as raising the retirement age to 70, eliminating the eight-hour workday, and hiking contributions for long-term and health care, as examples of what is being pushed through. “We are saying: Enough is enough. We must take to the streets and stop these cuts” she declared.

To coincide with these messages, The Left is launching nationwide social protests today. Demonstrations against reductions in the social system are scheduled in several cities, including Berlin, Cologne, and Hanover.
